Feature Friday: Pittsburg Farmers' Market it's the season to grow
It has been an exciting year for the Pittsburg Farmers' Market with the completion of their new market building in March 2014. The design of this building caters well to vendors and guests with a wide, walking aisle down the middle of the building with vendors on both sides and an information booth with a debit/credit machine for consumers. The market also participates in the EBT program and accepts SNAP cards.
Products featured at the market include everything from jellies, jams, fresh produce, beef, pork, lamb, hand dipped Belgian chocolates, melted glass, hand lotions, sugar scrubs, bees wax lip balm, wood arches, home decor, primitive wood art, to baked goods, plants/herbs and much more. Pittsburg prides itself on providing local options to consumers. Everything sold must be grown or created within 75 miles of the market. The market has weekly prize giveaways and activities. The second Saturday of each month is Customer Appreciation Week and the market awards a customer with a basket filled with products donated by its vendors. The third Saturday is Kids Activity Day, and the last Saturday is Sample Saturday where customers can sample products from the vendors. In addition to these themed weekends, every weekend a different group from the community sets up in the information booth to inform the community about their organization. Recent features include: Live Well Eat Well, Southeast Kansas Humane Society, Zone 6 Garden Club and much more.
The Pittsburg Farmers' Market also takes advantage of several promotional marketing opportunities including a weekly newsletter, Facebook page, a weekly Thursday morning radio spot and a monthly spot on three local TV stations. These broadcasts share what the market will be offering each week. Also shared are quick and easy recipes using food products that can be found at the market. For more information about the recipes or radio spots contact Jill Campbell at (417) 437-3564.
Currently the market has a record number of 25 vendors. In an attempt to boost markets hosted on Wednesday nights, weekly drawings occur for a $10 dollar certificate to the market. The market is open from Easter to Halloween on Wednesdays, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is located between 11th street and Broadway.
