Pet Delights: Pupsicle treats for your dogs
If you are looking for a fun quick treat for your pups, we’ve got two great options for you. Chef Alli has whipped up these dishes with the help of Vicki from Pet Delights. To find out more about Pet Delights, or where you can purchase their products such as treats or cake mixes, check out their online store on the From the Land of Kansas Marketplace.
Note from Chef Alli: Looking for a healthy, refreshing snack your pups will love during the dog days of summer, no matter WHAT their age? You’ve found it! These frosty treats are easy to whip up, and once frozen in an ice cube tray, they store nicely in an up-cycled egg carton in your freezer, all handy for Fido and his pals.
Miss Vicki’s Pupsicles
32 oz. plain yogurt
1/3 cup peanut butter
1-2 Tbs. pure honey
Blend all ingredients together and pour into individual containers to freeze. The size of your dog may determine the container size in which you freeze the pupsicles; use a basic ice cube tray, or, if you have a larger dog, you may choose to freeze the pupsicles in paper cups, for a larger portion. Store pupsicles in an air tight container in your freezer.
Sweet Potato Pupsicles
1 cup cooked sweet potato puree
2 Tbs. cup peanut butter
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/4 cup carob chips, optional
Place sweet potato, peanut butter and yogurt into the bowl of a food processor; pulse until blended. If adding carob chips, add to bowl and pulse until chips are uniformly distributed, as desired. Portion mixture into ice cube trays or desired containers and freeze.
Sweet potato notes:
- Oven: Sweet potatoes are super easy to roast in the oven. Simply rub the skins with a bit of vegetable oil, then place on to a cookie sheet and into a preheated 350 degree oven. Cook for approximately 1 hour, or until the sweet potatoes are nice and soft. Once cooled, slit the tops and “gush” out the pulp.
- Microwave: Don’t want to heat up the house with the oven? You can also poke the sweet potatoes with a fork multiple times to make “vents”, wrap them in saran/plastic wrap and cook them in the microwave. Cook them in 5 minute increments until they are soft so you are careful not to overcook. Cook until they are soft to the touch.
**Please note: Both of these recipes can be easily customized to the liking of your furry friends – shredded carrots, smashed bananas, and many other healthy ingredients can be added to the mix that you freeze.
