The smells of Kansas agriculture

While many people may think the smell of cattle feedlots in southwest Kansas is not something to be desired, it will always be the smell of home to me, the smell of the agriculture-strong community I am proud to have been raised in.

On a recent trip to the Kansas City metro area to visit current members and recruit new members, I was able to experience lots of great smells in just a couple days.

The smell of BBQ sauce- Original Juans is Kansas company that has been iconic in the Kansas City area since 1998. They have 13 different brands with more than 150 products. Some recognizable brands include Pain is Good, Da’Bomb, Fiesta Juan’s, Bilardo Brothers and Mama Capri. In addition, the team at Original Juan works with more than 100 companies throughout the state helping them package their sauces and seasonings, the country and the world.

Smokehouse scent- Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que has been an important part of the Kansas City barbecue scene for many years. Driving up to the gas station location and seeing the line around the corner always creates great memories and tastes.

Fermenting grains- The beautiful Dark Horse Distillery is not only a great event space, but also a working distillery. They take Kansas wheat and other local grains to create delicious spirits in their Olathe location. Interested in what it takes to go from the wheat in the field to the spirits in the bottle? Stop by and see them; they have great tours.

Tex Mex spices- Jose Pepper’s is the home for tex-mex and now you can take the flavors to your kitchen that you have enjoyed in the restaurant. Their line of spices, marinades, beans, rice and salsa are delicious and available in grocery stores near you
