Black Dog Salsa Brings the Heat

Growing up in Southwest Kansas, Rhonda Schwindt always enjoyed helping out in her grandmother’s garden. She recalls her grandmother’s sand hill plum jelly being the best around, and was inspired to create her own recipe, and later on, a homemade salsa recipe. After the encouragement of friends and family and the adoption of a black furry puppy that would eventually grow to nearly 200 pounds, who serves as her business’ namesake, Black Dog Salsa was born.
Two of Rhonda’s recipes set Black Dog Salsa apart from other salsa brands: peach salsa and pepper jellies. Her peach salsa is made with tomatoes, a specialty blend of peppers and other spices, and of course, peaches. The pepper jellies are available in peach jalapeno, peach habanero, strawberry jalapeno, strawberry habanero, and pineapple jalapeno.
“You can buy ‘regular’ jelly anywhere so I wanted to market something unique that is not in a grocery store,” says Rhonda.
Some of the popular Black Dog Salsa products include Sweet Heat, otherwise known as "cowboy candy." It is made of jalapeno slices cooked in a sweet sauce, hence the name! Black Dog Salsa also offers a specialty series of jellies called the "Bar Fight" Series, which are unique jellies that include a blend of various fruits, jalapenos and bourbon: Kentucky (blueberry and blackberry), Peach Ruckus (peach and mango), and Strawberry Brawl (strawberry and rhubarb).
Be sure to check out the Black Dog Salsa Facebook page and website to stay updated on new flavor releases that are truly one-of-a-kind. You can even purchase Black Dog Salsa products in select locations in Leoti, Scott City, Emporia, Dodge City, and Allen.
