Imagine walking into the shed in your grandma’s backyard to discover a cool and comfortable room furnished with a warm oven and filled with sugar, freshly-picked fruit and all the ingredients it takes to make a one-of-a-kind jelly. Oh yes, and boxes filled with glass jars ready to be delivered to some long-time customers, as well as some new ones.

What started as the simple hobby of growing a garden and learning how to can produce turned into Debra Gerard and Kris Sallee, two Kansas moms, becoming business partners. This happened after the two were asked to give a jelly making demonstration at the Kansas Sampler Festival. When they realized their business did not yet have a name, Gerard looked around their kitchen for inspiration and Sticky Spoons was born.

Sticky Spoons specializes in hand-picked sandhill plum jelly. This product often makes customers nostalgic. Many say the Sticky Spoons jelly recipe is as close to their own family’s recipe as they can find. Other popular flavors of Sticky Spoons jelly include apple cinnamon, very cherry, elderberry, fresh peach and strawberry rhubarb. Beyond these favorites, 15 other flavors and sugar-free versions of each flavor are available. For those looking for an extra kick, be sure to try the three pepper jelly flavors: positively pepper, pyro peach and rockin’ raspberry.

After 27 years, Gerard and Sallee still enjoy sharing their product with fans. Gerard says customers can feel good knowing the jelly is a handmade product with freshly picked fruit. “It’s as wholesome as we can make it,” she says.

Gerard says that COVID-19 changed their business but they were able to persevere. They were only able to sell their jelly at three out of the usual 16 events this past year. Even so, they had many faithful customers mail ordering their product and the From the Land of Kansas holiday gift box order helped also. They are pleased to be able to sell wholesale again. “We appreciate all our jelly fans!” Gerard says. They are thankful for everyone who encourages them by continuing to buy their product.

But wait, there’s more! Sticky Spoons also makes quick bread mixes, including English oat scones and Kansas cocoa cake. Each mix is made with local flour from Stafford County Mills.

“Sticky Spoons makes our jelly as good as we would want to make it for our own families,” Gerard says.
