Do you want to start a business but need a larger space or better equipment to make your process easier? Incubator kitchens are a great way to do a trial for your products without spending a fortune on equipment and a building. There are 16 incubator kitchens available to you in the state of Kansas. You can find the whole list along with information here.

Recently, Gary Satter, Glacial Hills Resource Conservation & Development Inc. executive director, spoke about their facility, the Glacial Hills Food Center in Horton, Kansas spoke during a K-State Research and Extension e-Call. After having entrepreneurs voice their concerns about the cost of starting their own commercial kitchen, the Glacial Hills Resource Conservation & Development team started looking for a building to open a commercial kitchen in the northeast Kansas region. A 1,000 sq. foot building was donated by the hospital and has been transformed into a fully operating commercial kitchen, the Glacial Hills Food Center (GHFC).

“The commercial kitchen is a valuable resource for food entrepreneurs in the community and region who are planning to start a food business," said Satter, "It gives them the opportunity to test and develop their food product at little expense before introducing it to the marketplace. Once the demand is in the marketplace it provides a place to produce their products without them spending funds to develop their own facility during the start-up phase.”

The Kansas Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Block Grant covered most of the charges for updates and equipment in the building. The kitchen includes a six-burner gas range with a stove, packaging machine, cold and dry storage, 25-gallon steam kettle and more! Not only does the GHFC provide space for businesses to produce their products, but they also provide free counseling, planning, training and technical assistance to those running and/or opening a business. Inside this building there are also offices, a cookbook library, breakroom, and storage room available to renters. You can rent this space for $15/hour.
