Schlaegel's Popcorn: A Family Tradition Since 1970
Schlaegel’s Popcorn has been delivering fresh, delicious popcorn to their customers since 1970. Founded by Gary and Marian Schlaegel as what started out as growing popcorn for their family’s caramel corn recipe has turned into sharing their products with friends and customers. Schlaegel’s Popcorn is grown on the same family farm in Whiting, Kansas as it was in 1970 but today, there are over 20 flavors of delicious popcorn to choose from!
Schlaegel’s Popcorn is truly a family business. “The whole family has worked and pitched in at some point or another to make the business what is it today,“ said Jon Yingst, a manager at Schlaegel’s. Jon is Gary and Marian’s son in law and when he retired from education a few years ago, he came to work for the family business. Jon’s son Jacob graduated from Kansas State University and came home to manage and is now a co-owner of Schlaegel’s Popcorn. In 2022, Jacob started sharing the growing process to educate customers on where their food is coming from. How neat is that? You can find the series on their Facebook page.
“I suppose the best part is seeing the family work together to keep the tradition of growing and selling popcorn alive,” said Jon. Growing popcorn at the capacity of Schlaegel’s takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Lucky for us, the Schlaegel family are no strangers to hard work. “Watching the cycle of planting, to harvesting, to selling the final product and knowing it all took place on our farm is rewarding.”
Schlaegel’s Popcorn offers an extensive variety of different ways to enjoy their popcorn. Through their website, you can choose from popped and unpopped popcorn, gift boxes, and tins. Schlaegel’s also offers their popcorn to be purchased in larger quantities for weddings, meetings, corporate events, parties, and fundraisers! You can call or place an order directly through their website. Schlaegel’s can also create custom labels for bags and gift boxes as well.
Schlaegel’s Popcorn also attends the Maple Leaf festival as a vendor. The Maple Leaf festival is held every October in Baldwin City, Kansas. The festival is very important to Schlaegel’s as they have been attending for over 30 years!
“We hope people know that we care about what we do and we want to sell the freshest, tastiest popcorn we can. We’re proud to grow our own popcorn and make our popcorn treats here on the farm where it all began,” said Jon.
Last year, Schlaegel’s sold 14,000 pounds of popcorn. Nearly two thirds of their yearly business is done between October and Christmas. What started out as popping and flavoring popcorn as Christmas gifts has turned into a family-owned and operated business that has shipped to all 50 states!
