From Tragedy to Taste: The Inspiring Story Behind the Duck Brand

Sometimes the best things come from the toughest moments. After a devastating F5 tornado tore through the town of Greensburg, Kansas, Duck Salt was born — a symbol of resilience and community. Starting as a small salty treat shared with friends and neighbors, it turned into a local favorite.

In 2011, Matt Deighton founded Duck Salt to spread flavor, hope, and positivity during a difficult time. Matt and his dog, Molly, were inseparable and she was by his side through every challenge. What began as a simple seasoning grew into something much bigger. Inspired by Molly, books were written about her and the tornado that devastated their town, serving as a powerful symbol of Matt’s dedication to his community and country.

Sadly, Matt passed away in February of 2022, leaving many wondering what the future would hold for the business. Close friends and long supporters of Matt’s, Jerrod (Duck Man) and Jessica Nelsen, decided to buy the company. Their goal was simple yet heartfelt — to honor Matt’s memory by continuing his legacy of community and kindness through the brand he built with passion.

Duck Salt is handcrafted in small batches from the finest ingredients. “Our fans can’t get enough of its outstanding flavor, which enhances the taste of already great food,” said Jerrod. From the success of Duck Salt came Duck Nuts — “nuts, only better!” Their peanuts and cashews are roasted in 100% pure peanut oil and then coated with a signature blend of spices for a flavored explosion that is bold and offers unique flavor. Every bite is a reminder of their craftsmanship, hard work, and quality.   

Duck Nuts is a proud family-owned business and operates with old-fashioned principles. In 2024, Duck Nuts decided to partner with a local family-owned roaster that shares similar values. Along with the Duck Nuts values and community, they have a deep commitment to doing good. Through their 4% “Give A Quack”, they proudly donate a portion of proceeds to local causes and communities. “We believe in kindness, community, and good deeds — it’s about flavor, friendship, and faith,” Jerrod states.

The business continues to embody the spirit that started it all — turning hardship into hope and simple ingredients into something extraordinary. Through every bag and bottle of Duck products, Matt’s legacy lives on in the values of quality, community, and generosity. Jerrod says, “I truly believe we have the best nuts and seasoning in the world!”
